Academic Resource Center Some Useful Nooks and Crannies of the ARC
In a previous column, I sketched out the overall structure of the Academic Resource Center (ARC), going over the main categories of resources that it offers. You may recall that the ARC contains sections for Career, Community, Service, Teaching and Research, and that it also lets you navigate by content area (B2B, CB, Management, Services, Research, etc.). In this column, I want to highlight some specific resources that appear within these broad categories. I am betting that I have come up with a list of extremely useful links on the ARC that you do not know about.
Calls for Papers (Research Menu) Calls for papers for marketing and related topics are archived in a database that can be sorted by location or by the due date of the call, thanks to ARC Conferences Editor, Linda M. Foley. These include both conferences and journal special issues calls. To give you an idea of the coverage, in 2005, there were 301 such calls! You can receive these calls via e-mail--they are announced on ELMAR--or you can look them up in the archive.
Classroom Software (Teaching Menu) The ARC provides extensive coverage of all kinds of software (e.g., statistical, mathematical, word processing, bibliographic database management). One of its more complete sections covers classroom games and business simulation. Overall, the section lists more than 60 programs with overviews and contact information for each one.
Journal Tables of Contents (Research Menu) Each week, freshly published tables of contents are posted on the ARC, and if you want, you can also receive notice of the week's new releases in your e-mail inbox. Our coverage includes more than 175 journals from both marketing and related fields with marketing relevance.
Journal Rankings (Research Menu) The ARC collects articles and numerous calculations, tables, and rankings on the subject of journal prestige.
Marketing Theories (Research Menu) There is a new section on the ARC with entries for many of the theories that we use in academic marketing. Each entry includes a brief overview, key literature, a note on which marketing areas use this theory, and slides designed to easily pop into your PowerPoint sequences. This is an ideal area for PhD student involvement.
PhD Consortia and PhD Grants and Awards (Career Menu) Speaking of PhD students, the ARC has a list of all the marketing PhD consortia, grants and awards of which we are aware, including relevant contact information. This list includes numerous AMA and non-AMA sources.
PhD Programs (Career Menu) This section compiles an exhaustive list of universities with PhD programs in marketing. It includes 154 entries, aproximately one third of which are located outside the United States.
Webcasts (Teaching Menu) This archive of recent AMA Webcasts ideal for classroom use. Some of the topics include Advertising, B2B, Branding, CRM, Internet Marketing, Sales, Strategy, Marketing ROI, and Marketing Careers.
Reviewing (Service Menu) The ARC has a page with a variety of help, tips and advice from the biggest names in our field about how to draft a good review. Reviews form the cornerstone of progress in our field, and we can all learn more about how to be better reviewers.
