  History of Brands and Branding

ARC: Etc: History: References: Brands and Branding

areas: product: history

The following book talks about the history of brands and branding:

  • History of Brands and Branding: Keller, Kevin Lane (1998), Strategic Brand Management: Building, Measuring, and Managing Brand Equity,  Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall.

According to Evans (1992, p. 54), during the Song Dynasty (960-1127 CE) in China, merchants used branding to falsely pass-off  lower grade garden tea as the higher grade hill tea by using names, such as "Misty Mountain Tea", "Garden in the Sky Tea" and "Cloudy Mountain Tea". The cited source is "Tea in China: The History of China's National Drink". The original source is said by the author to be The Lu Yu, "The Classic of Tea" (c. 760, sic. Tang Dynasty).  Thanks to Peter Sinclair for this citation.

  • Evans, John C. 1992, "Tea in China: The History of China's National Drink", Greenwood Press, New York
