Acknowledging the importance of marketing in a borderless world, the American Marketing Association, in conjunction with the Madhuri and Jagdish N. Sheth Foundation, honored Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Group, as the recipient of the 2009 Sheth Medal for Exceptional Leadership.

Through a video presentation previously recorded in Mumbai, Tata accepted the internationally-recognized award for his transformational contributions to the marketing field.   He was selected as the 2009 Sheth Medal recipient in recognition of the vision, courage and broad-based leadership he demonstrated in transforming his company into a global entity and in breaking down barriers leading to global economic change.

“Mr. Tata exemplifies what it takes to introduce a historic but dynamic brand to new markets on an increasingly borderless planet” said Nancy Costopulos, Chief Marketing Officer for the American Marketing Association.  “Clearly, there are lessons all marketers can learn from Tata about building a brand across product lines, borders and customer segments”.

In his keynote presentation on “Building Brands Across Borders” during the Mplanet conference, R.K. Krishna Kumar, Chairman of Tata Coffee and Vice Chairman of Tata Tea and Indian Hotels, Tata Sons Ltd, called "for balance in driving human enterprises" through "a more responsible form of capitalism." Kumar elaborated on Tata's ability to generate consumer support and loyalty through a brand that supports growth in infrastructure and social well-being.

The medal is awarded through the Madhuri and Jagdish N. Sheth Foundation, which supports academic scholarship, publications, education and research in the marketing field. Its founder, Dr. Jagdish Sheth, is a renowned marketing scholar and authority whose insights on global competition, strategic thinking and customer relationship management are considered revolutionary. Sheth is currently the Charles H. Kellstadt Professor of Marketing in the Goizueta Business School at Emory University.
