BazaarWelcome to the Bazaar

Is marketing research, whose primary function is to provide timely, accurate and relevant information about consumers and markets for decision making failing us? In spite of companies being awash in data and being indulged by almost cost-free data processing capabilities, the information gap between decision makers and consumers is actually widening, not narrowing.  As a result, the industry is actively looking at bazaars, wikis and other evolving approaches to customer information generation..

What Really Affects Behavior?
Products succeed in the marketplace largely based on a healthy level of competition and consumers’ response to the quality of the marketing mix. Behavioral economics, however, reveals that the context and situation surrounding product choice, decision heuristics and how consumers react to risk can sometimes trump the marketing mix.

Word-of-Mouth Marketing, 2010 Style
Marketers are truly working to understand and embrace social media. According to a recent PQ Media study, spending on word-of-mouth marketing is expected to grow nearly 80% in the next three years, rising from $1.70 billion in 2009 to $3.04 billion by 2013. That’s not surprising, as more marketers take to heart reports that more than 90% of consumers list word-of-mouth recommendations as the leading influence on their purchase behavior.

How Important Are Brands? A Cross-Category, Cross-Country Study
Since brand building requires considerable investment, managers must make the case for the relevance of brand-building activities to a company’s success. The conditions for successful brand building are not equally favorable across categories, and depend on several factors.  A new diagnostic metric—category brand relevance—measures the overall role brands play in the decision making of customers in a specific category.

The Cause Manifesto: Finding Greener Pastures
Loyalty marketers have long understood how to leverage data-driven insight to effect profitable customer behavior change. Brands are now turning to these same tactics to help consumers make more ethical choices in their purchasing behavior, lifestyles and brand relationships. Whether the cause is green, global poverty or finding a cure, consumers now demand that companies embrace cause-related marketing.
