The American Marketing Association established an awards program for faculty advisors of AMA collegiate chapters in 1977-78. This awards program was named in honor of Dr. Hugh G. Wales, who was instrumental in founding the collegiate chapter program and was the Association's first collegiate chapter advisor at the University of Illinois-Champaign.
Purpose
The purpose of this program is to recognize the contributions of faculty advisors to the AMA collegiate chapter program by honoring outstanding advisors.
Eligibility
All faculty advisors of AMA collegiate chapters are eligible for nomination, except those currently serving as representatives on the Collegiate Chapters Council. Before a faculty advisor is nominated, he/she must have two consecutive years of experience or more advising an AMA collegiate chapter. The recipients of either Faculty Advisor of the Year or Outstanding Advisor Award from the prior three academic years cannot be nominated.
Awards
Advisor Awards are granted in the following categories:
Advisor Of The Year -- One advisor selected from among the outstanding faculty advisors as the top advisor to a collegiate chapter in 2011-2012.
Outstanding Faculty Advisors -- No more than two (2) advisors will be selected as outstanding advisors in 2011-2012.
Procedures
Collegiate chapters are invited to nominate a faculty advisor for consideration in the advisor awards program. Nominating procedures are simple and consist of submitting two documents:
- A PDF of the official nomination form (PDF /DOC), and
- A PDF of the nomination report.
These documents should be sent electronically to:
Manager of Collegiate Chapters, collegiate@ama.org
Nominations must be received no later than December 6, 2011. The nomination report details the supporting evidence for the faculty advisor nomination in accordance with the evaluation criteria, and student judges are selected from collegiate chapters to judge the nominations.
Rules
- The report should be typed (double-spaced) and not exceed three (3) pages in length.
- The report must not refer to the advisor by name; the advisor should only be referred to as "he/she," "him/her," "himself/herself," etc.
- The name of the school and/or chapter is prohibited from appearing in any of the materials to ensure complete objectivity in the evaluation process.
- The official nomination form (PDF/DOC), must be signed by the collegiate chapter president and at least five (5) other chapter members.
Evaluation
The evaluation is conducted by a special awards committee consisting of 2011-12 collegiate chapter officers. Judges are not allowed to evaluate nominations for their own faculty advisors. Announcements of the award winners are made at the awards banquet during the International Collegiate Conference.
Criteria
The faculty advisor plays a critical role in the success of the AMA collegiate chapter program. The extent to which this role is fulfilled is often a key ingredient in the success of a chapter. Again, each nomination report must not refer to the name of the school or of the advisor.
The nomination report should describe the manner in which the faculty advisor has fulfilled his/her role in serving the needs of the chapter. Please cite specific examples to explain why the advisor should be considered for recognition in this awards program. A partial list of areas to consider in describing the qualifications of the faculty advisor is shown below. Include any other areas that describe the contributions of the faculty advisor to the success of the chapter.
- Chapter guidance (providing counsel and/or feedback, offering suggestions, etc.).
- Training (of chapter officers and committee chairs).
- Planning assistance (in setting objectives, program development, budgeting, obtaining resources from the school and community, etc.)
- Motivation.
- Communication:
- with chapter officers
- with the business community
- with the college or university
- with the local AMA professional chapter (where possible)
- with AMA Headquarters.
6. Providing for continuity in the chapter from year to year.
7. General support for the chapter and its activities
8. Service to the AMA Collegiate Division (e.g., judging chapter plans/annual
reports/websites, participation in faculty sessions at the International
Collegiate Conference, etc.).
9. Any other areas in which your advisor makes a significant contribution in support of your collegiate chapter or the profession of Marketing.
Nominations must be received no later than December 6, 2011.
