David Miller

Name: David Miller
Title & Company: Associate/The John Buck Company
Education: BS in Communications @ Ohio University
Work Experience: 6 years
What I do: I help develop new business and maintain existing accounts in the commercial real estate industry.  Technically, I am a tenant representation office broker that assists companies/organizations of all sizes to parallel their business plans with an effective real estate strategy. The job has many different aspects from selling on the phone to understanding complex financial analysis. It also involves high-level negotiations with product brokers to achieve maximum cost savings and minimal risks on behalf of our clients. On a typical day, I spend half time selling top-tier decision-makers, whether it be CFO or the managing partners of law firms. This work is both on the phone and face to face. The other half of my time is spent preparing/researching the necessary information for these meetings and calls.
How I Got HereI got here through a personal relationship I developed over a year with a senior broker. I met the senior broker while caddying my first year out of college. He advised me to get a year of outside sales experience before entering this business. I did this and returned to him in a year where I was lucky enough to find an opportunity available.

Skills Needed: Determination, perseverance, ability to accept failure, patience, and competitiveness.

Where do I go from hereAfter almost five years in the business I plan to stay in the commerical real estate field for my career. I feel that I have a decent foothold in the industry and could use my acquired knowledge of the Chicago market in most real estate selling positons.

Advice: My advice for someone entering this field would be to "look at the big picture"; rarely does something happen overnight in this business.

Biggest MisconceptionMost people think you can get rich quick.

To enjoy and to succeed in this position you need to: To enjoy and succeed you must be organized, smart, and tactful in the way you sell to top-tier decision makers.
