Thought Leadership Initiatives

ARC: Connections: Academic Council: Thought Leadership

American Marketing Association
Academic Council
Process for Proposal/Approval of Thought Leadership Initiatives

Background information on Thought Leadership Initiative:

One of the American Marketing Association’s principal roles, as defined in the association’s Mission Statement, is to advance the thought, application and ethical practice of marketing. In support of this key activity, the association launched a Thought Leadership Initiative led by Past Chairperson of the Board, Bart Weitz, and managed by the AMA’s Academic Council.

In support of this initiative, the AMA will consider applications for funding of events or activities. Such events or activities would address the development and dissemination of marketing knowledge specifically as it relates to research on substantive marketing issues and the provision of managerial implications. For example, proposed events or activities could provide insights into improving the effectiveness of a functional area in marketing or cover a special issue related to a specific marketing environment. The end result will be dissemination of knowledge to marketing practitioners and academics through the American Marketing Association.

Proposal and Approval Process:

  • All proposals for Thought Leadership Workshops initiatives be sent to:

      Senior Director Professional Development

  • Proposals for events planned for July 1 through June 30 must be submitted no later than January 15 preceding the July 1 beginning of the AMA fiscal year
  • Proposals should be made only for events that will include both academic and practitioner participants
  • The proposals will be reviewed by the Executive Committee of the Academic Council
  • A response regarding AMA funding may be expected within 45 days of receipt of the proposal.

Funding Guidelines:

  • The American Marketing Association will cover up to $10,000 of any liability resulting from this event.
  • This funding will be sent following receipt and review by AMA of an itemized accounting of revenue and expense for the event.
When appropriate, AMA will send a check for one-half of the approved total funding prior to the event with the balance sent following receipt of full accounting – in any event this funding covers liability only.

Branding Expectations for Proposed Events/Activities:

  • Prominently acknowledge as an AMA event in all literature and electronic communications associated with the conference.
  • Provide website for the event to AMA for posting on MarketingPower.com and promote the event through other appropriate AMA publications or events (e.g., Academic Resource Center (ARC), conference registration packets)

Deliverables for Thought Leadership Funding:

  • Provide AMA with one complimentary registration to the event
  • Provide all appropriate content in the form of a managerial summary of the event’s content and implications for posting on the members-only section of MarketingPower.com and publication in AMA print publications as determined by AMA. Content to be provided to AMA within 90 days of the conclusion of the event unless otherwise agreed by AMA.
  • Work with the Academic Council to consider other opportunities to disseminate content (e.g., conference sessions)
  • Give the AMA the right of first refusal for publication of academic papers generated by this event and/or seek AMA approval of publication in any other academic journal(s).
