Question
Do you have any tips on obtaining positions in states that you currently do not reside in?

Answer
There are many great ways to get a position in another state.

  1. Tap into your alumni networks for both undergraduate and graduate schools. Many schools have local or regional offices with staff that can give you “the lay of the land” in your chosen city. They may also be able to put you in contact with appropriate professionals in your career field. Schedule informational phone interviews with these contacts to network and understand more about who might be hiring in a particular city.
  2. Another great avenue is a marketing placement firm, like Aquent, which helps marketers find opportunities nationwide.
  3. Professional associations, like the AMA, can be a great way to connect with openings as well. Especially in this tough economic climate, you might need to finance your own “scouting trip” to explore opportunities in person.
  4. Get back in touch with personal and professional contacts via social networking sites like LinkedIn and Facebook.
