Question
I would like to start taking courses to expand my marketing skill set and knowledge base but am not sure what direction to go in.  I know that everything is going digital so I was thinking of SEO, HTML or learning the basics of graphic design software systems. Do you have any recommendations?

Answer
Your question leads me to believe that you are not certain exactly where you’d like to take your career. If you are truly interested in marketing proper, then it would be worthwhile familiarizing yourself with the basic tools and concepts of SEO and SEM. If, however, you would prefer to go in the direction of advertising/communications, then you should immerse yourself in the fundamentals of design and once you’ve decided which medium most appeals to you, familiarize yourself with the most appropriate software tools.
Still, no course in any of these areas will get you work right off the bat. For this reason, I would recommend that you start by getting involved with online media in order to figure out what you like and what you don’t. Twitter, Tumblr, Blogger, etc. all allow you to create basic web pages that you can use to explore the possibilities of the digital realm.
