Question
I am relocating to the state of Texas and would like to know which of the following 3 cities have the most marketing opportunities: Austin, Dallas, or Houston. I ran an internet search and noticed that the city with the most jobs posted online is Dallas, however I would greatly appreciate your professional opinion. I have a network of contacts in each city, but basically have very little corporate marketing experience aside from the duties that will transpire from my previous sales roles and marketing internships in college.

Answer
If Dallas has more job postings than the other cities, that may be due to the fact that it was the fastest growing of the three and, if you consider the entire Dallas metroplex, really constitutes the economic hub of North Texas. At the same time, Houston is technically the larger city and, as it turns out, we do quite a bit more business in Houston than Dallas, though this is in part due to the amount of IT business we do in Houston.
At the same time, I wouldn’t necessarily base my decision on the sheer number of marketing jobs you see in a particular city. I would instead recommend that you focus your search on a particular industry or even company and then look for work where they are. If I’m not mistaken, HP is in Houston, Texas Instruments is near Dallas, and Dell is in Austin. Similarly, Dallas has Exxon Mobil while Houston has ConocoPhillips among other oil companies. Long story short, focus on industry then company, then city. “Marketing” is just too broad a category to be meaningful.
