Question
I am a recent graduate with a marketing and communications degree.  I have been working as an editorial assistant with the government for the past year however I am pursuing a Master's in Public Health and would like to find a position in a social/health marketing capacity.  Do you have any advice or suggestions on avenues I can take to get a social/health marketing position while in pursuit of my graduate degree?

Answer
There are two avenues that present themselves immediately to me. The first is to see if there are any marketing opportunities within the school you are attending. Schools will generally have a wide range of publications that they generate, from brochures to course catalogs to research journals. One idea would be to use your experience as an editorial assistant to get a marketing related job with one of these publications. The journals and even the catalogue may have some advertising or promotional component where you could lend your expertise. The brochures targeting prospective students and alumni or philanthropic donors are even more explicitly marketing-oriented in their intent and may have even more need for your particular services.
The second avenue would be to reach out to community-based or non-profit health organizations and see if you could get a marketing position there. These types of organizations often have marketing needs, either aimed at informing the public of their services or procuring funding and sponsorship for their programs, and are frequently understaffed. For this reason you may very well be able to land a job with them as an intern or volunteer or, in the best case scenario, as someone paid on a project-by-project basis. Best of luck!
