Question
What is the best way to get approval to add marketing staff?  What points to I need to cover and what information do I need to include in my request?

Answer
This is a tough one, not knowing your specific situation, but here are the questions you should be thinking about as you make your case:

  •       What are the company’s specific goals for the coming year and beyond?
  •       Given current resources, what can you do to move the company towards these goals?
  •       If you had additional resources, what more could be done to help the company meet and beat its goals?
  •       If additional campaigns, programs, promotions, research, etc. would benefit the company, what would be the most efficient and cost-effective way to execute them?
  •       Would it be better to hire contractors or engage an agency to handle some or all of these projects?
  •       When (and why) would it be better to add permanent staff to oversee some of these programs

You need to back into this. Start with company goals, what you can currently do, and what you could do if you had the resources. Then “package” the things you would like to do as modular and realistic projects, detailing their costs and the envisioned return. In some cases, of course, it may make sense to outsource these projects, or at least handle them through contractors.
If it turns out that you can assemble these projects into a full-time job for someone, of course, then you have the foundations for a staff request. Specifically, you’ll be able to connect the cost of staff to the projected benefits and tie these benefits to the overarching company goals which, in the end, are what matter most to the deciders.
