My question is with regard to the IMC degree. How is it being received in the industry? Are there jobs for graduates with this degree?

Tracy Sinclair
AQUENT

Tracy Sinclair is the Director of the Marketing Practice at Aquent, a talent agency for marketing and design talent. Prior to Aquent, Tracy was a Brand Manager at Procter & Gamble and a strategy consultant for Zyman Group. She has a BA from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Cornell University.

Question
I am a re-entry graphic designer- mainly print, who is considering an expensive graduate degree in Integrated Marketing Communications. As an Aquent professional I think you could understand my background. I worked in marketing departments and in advertising agencies. I loved the design work but want to expand my marketing knowledge base, to better understand the decisions that are made before the creative director hands me the project.
I know I would enjoy this degree, but I am nervous about the job market afterwards. I would like to get a position in brand management or in marketing management in the creative fields, or better yet, at a zoo!
My question is with regard to the IMC degree. How is it being received in the industry? Are there jobs for graduates with this degree. Do you think it would achieve my goal of adding marketing skills to my solid design skills with the goal of amplifying my abilities as a creative marketer?
Any questions I should have asked?
Answer
If you want to go into brand management (general management and marketing of a consumer product brand) then you definitely want an MBA. Almost every company requires an MBA of its Assistant Brand Managers, the entry-level position in consumer packaged goods. If you want to land on the marketing communications side of the business (developing corporate communications or similar) then an IMC may be a good option. However, in general, an MBA will be more versatile and will allow you greater career options. IMC degrees just aren’t as established as MBA programs.
