Courtney Dunn Shirley joined Volunteers of America Chesapeake, Inc. in September of 2009 and was quickly promoted to Communications & Media Relations Manager in March of 2010 with the primary responsibility of developing all communication and media relations strategies and materials to increase the non-profit’s brand awareness.
Ms. Dunn is also responsible for leading all public relations initiatives; overseeing from production to distribution the Annual Report, quarterly external newsletter Caring Chronicles and monthly internal newsletter Chesapeake Chatter; managing the organization’s website; and writing all advocacy, press, communications and web content for the organization and its 26 programs located geographically from Baltimore to Virginia Beach.
Prior to joining Volunteers of America Chesapeake Ms. Dunn worked as Weekend Anchor/Producer and Morgantown Bureau Chief for WBOY-TV, the leading NBC affiliate in North Central West Virginia. As a one-man-band reporter she was responsible for independently shooting, writing, editing and reporting all of her stories for the station’s main newscasts. Ms. Dunn is most proud of her year-long reporting from Memphis, TN and Morgantown, WV on the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Dream Home Project and her exclusive Capitol Hill interview with the longest-serving member in the history of the United States Congress, the late Sen. Robert C. Byrd. Ms. Dunn’s other broadcast journalism background includes The Fox News Channel in New York, WPHL-TV in Philadelphia and 9&10 News in Northern Michigan.
A graduate of Northwestern University, she holds a master’s degree in Journalism from the Medill School of Journalism and a bachelor’s degree in Theatre from Northwestern’s School of Communication, with a minor in English.
